The First National Smart Sports Games kicked off in Yuhang district of Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, on Dec 29.

Roughly 1,400 sports lovers from across the country vied for medals in 13 intelligent categories including cycling, running, racing, golfing, shooting, skiing and taekwondo during the three-day event.

As the biggest event in smart sports, the national games aim to build an internet sports platform in which everyone can be involved without any geographic or space boundaries by employing advanced technologies including big data, virtual reality, the Internet of Things and cloud computing.

"I participated in a smart cycling competition and all I needed was a mobile phone with the app of the games on it," said a contestant, adding that the results will be recorded via a bracelet before being uploaded to the app.

Unlike traditional cycling competitions which are subject to weather conditions, the internet ranking allows contestants to finish the game at any time and place they want, according to a local official.

The finals was held on Dec 30 and 31.
