Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, designated Sept 26 as Craftsmen Day, the first of its kind in China, according to a meeting held on April 3.

The day is designed to promote the spirit of craftsmanship and to commemorate the day when Qiantang River Bridge, China's first modern iron bridge, opened to traffic on Sept 26, 1937.

Crossing the Qiantang River in Hangzhou, the bridge was the first double-decker bridge of its kind to ever be constructed in China and served as a crucial transportation link for railways between Shanghai, Hangzhou and the neighboring city of Ningbo.

The bridge marks an important milestone in Chinese railway history and is the product of pure craftsmanship.

In recent years, Hangzhou has been striving to cultivate skilled artisans as part of its efforts to build itself into a city of high-quality craftsmanship.
