Delegates to the ongoing "two sessions" recently began discussions on how to build Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, into a "famous historic and cultural city".

The discussions are centered on how to carry Hangzhou's traditional culture forward in a more creative manner and promote it to the world.

Here are some of the ideas presented by delegates:

Guo Lingzhi, deputy researcher at the Hangzhou Cultural Industry Development Center

Guo said that building a historic and cultural city requires not only the preservation of culture, but also innovation.

He suggested that Hangzhou make use of digital technologies to develop its digital cultural industry and promote Grand Canal culture.

Yu Qingfeng, playwright and member of the Hangzhou Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference

Yu said that Hangzhou should more deeply explore and take better advantage of traditional Chinese operas. He expressed hope that government departments would make efforts to boost traditional Chinese culture, traditional Chinese operas in particular.

Gao Xiaohui, director of the Hangzhou Garden and Cultural Relics Bureau

Gao stressed the preservation of the three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Hangzhou - West Lake, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and Liangzhu Archaeological Site.

Zhou Qiong, master's supervisor at Zhejiang University of Technology

Zhou said that Hangzhou should step up efforts to promote the city's intangible cultural heritage and diversify the way it promotes culture.

He said that Hangzhou should make more use of various media platforms to promote the city's culture.
