A stadium resembling a yucong, a jade ritual vessel in ancient China with holes and rectangular sides, is taking shape in Hangzhou, local media reported on June 8.

Located in the south of the Olympic Sports City and along the Qiantang River, the mother river of Hangzhou, the stadium spans 184,500 square meters and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The building features a simple yet elegant design with hollowed-carved smooth lines representing the positive spirit of athletes.

The venue will be used for hosting competitions and training for sports such as basketball, wrestling, volleyball, taekwondo and handball during the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2022.

Yucong is a representative cultural relic unearthed in Hangzhou that bears the remnants of the 5,000-year-old Liangzhu civilization, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 6, 2019.
