The China Hangzhou Xianghu International Life and Health Industry Collaboration and Innovation Pilot Zone was unveiled in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province on July 9, local media reported.

The pilot zone, located in the Xianghu Lake Scenic Area of Xiaoshan district, covers an area of 53.5 square kilometers and is the largest national health industry collaboration and innovation pilot zone in Zhejiang province.

Jointly built by the International Cooperation Center (ICC) of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Xiaoshan district and Hangzhou-based Sanjiang Holding Group Co, the area aims to become the largest health-oriented pilot zone in the Yangtze River Delta region.

The pilot zone is crucial for Xiaoshan in building a national biomedical hub, said Wang Min, head of the district, adding that it will become a trademark for Xianghu after becoming a key national tourism destination in 2015.

Zhao Xueyu, an official from ICC of NDRC, noted that Xianghu Lake stands out due to local government support and a strong investment environment and industrial landscape.

Hangzhou is at the forefront of digital economy and biological economy. It is hoped that the zone will become a breeding ground for advanced technology through the introduction of international resources from countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative and cultivating key projects, said Song Gongmei, deputy director of ICC of NDRC.

A radiation stem cell emergency reserve center and a radiation damaged cell repair center were also established at the ceremony.

In recent years, Xiaoshan has been working to introduce and cultivate health-related projects as it seeks to drive economic transformation and upgrading.
