Hangzhou centenarians top 995

The number of centenarians in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, had reached 995 as of Sept 24, according to statistics released by the Hangzhou Municipal Health Commission on Oct 7, which also marked Double Ninth Festival, a traditional Chinese festival to honor seniors.

According to the commission, the oldest resident is a female surnamed Wang who lives in Qiantang New Area, aged 109. 

Statistics show that the number of Hangzhou centenarians has grown from 289 in 2009 to 995 in 2019. 

Over the past six years, nearly every year has seen more than 100 citizens reach 100 years of age, with the number of new additions this year topping 250. 

By the end of 2018, Zhejiang province had a total of 2,559 centenarians, 784 of whom were males and 1,775 were females. 

Currently, the oldest person in Zhejiang province is Jiang Suifeng of Rui’an city at a whopping 112 years of age.
