Hangzhou East Railway Station became China's first railway station to achieve full 5G service coverage, according to a local media news release.

A flurry of measures has been adopted by Hangzhou to deal with the increasing number of passengers at its Hangzhou East Railway Station.

During summer vacation this year, Hangzhou East Railway Station handled 13.64 million passengers, more than that of Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, putting it second in China.

The large number of passengers has given rise to better digitalized services for the railway station.

"The download speed of 5G is 100 times faster than 4G", said Jiang Linsen, an official with the Hangzhou East Railway Station, "passengers used to complain about the low speeds – not anymore.”

5G-powered intelligent robots were also put into use to answer passengers' questions regarding the train schedule and weather conditions. They can also broadcast news for passengers.

Hangzhou is now pioneering 5G service coverage after China recently announced that it would be commercializing 5G services.

Officials said that the 5G coverage area in Hangzhou is currently more than 1,300 square kilometers.
