Hangzhou launches intl orchestra competition

The 2020 International Orchestral Composition Competition, one the events of the ongoing Hangzhou Modern Music Festival, is now open to young composers from around the world.

Six of the submitted compositions will be performed by the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra during the finals on Sept 27, and the organizers will offer 100,000 yuan ($14,114.48) to the first place winner, 50,000 yuan to two second place winners, and 20,000 yuan to three third place winners.

The judge panel, led by Wang Rui, president of the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, consists of renowned composers from China and abroad, including Ye Xiaogang, Salvatore Sciarrin, Narong Prangcharoen, Francesco Filidei, Liam Cagney, Weng Chigeng, Guo Ming, and Wen Deqing.

The music festival's organizing committee will arrange transportation and accommodation for the winners throughout their stay in Hangzhou from Sept 24 to 28.

Submission requirements:

1. No registration free.

2. Composers must be under 40 years old (born after 1980), and can only submit one orchestral work (non-concerto).

3. Compositions must be between 10 and 12 minutes.

4. The compositions must adhere to the following rule for musical instruments: 3 3 3 3/4 3 3 1/4perc.1 Timp/1Harp/14 12 10 8 6.

5. The entries must not have been performed previously and have been written after 2019.

6. Participants must provide an electronic PDF file of their anonymous composition and send it to hzcmf@zjcm.edu.cn before Aug 1, 2020. They must provide documentation such as an ID or passport scan, clear photo above 1M, telephone number, email, mailing address, personal resume of around 100 words, and an introduction to their works of around 100 words.

7. Winners must be able to participate in band rehearsals and finals in person, and need to bring a recording and four paper copies of their composition within 10 minutes.
