Medical teams from Zhejiang province who helped fight the COVID-19 outbreak earlier this year in Central China's Wuhan, Hubei province recently received a special gift from Mongolia in the form of 756 boxes of mutton, local media reported.

Chinese believe that eating mutton in winter can ward off the cold and nourish the body, but the mutton donated by Mongolia has achieved more than that - it has also warmed hearts.

"I'm excited and grateful to receive the donations. It's an international recognition of our efforts against the epidemic and we will continue to play our part," said Ge Minghua, director of the Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital.

Yu Ping, head nurse at the hospital's neurosurgery department, said she will share the mutton with her son and mother.

"I wasn't able to be with my son when he was busy preparing for the national college entrance examinations, and I've been thankful to my mother to all the love and care she's given me," Yu said.

The sheep donated by Mongolia were transported to China in October, where they were inspected and quarantined before being slaughtered. The processed mutton from 15,000 sheep was distributed across Hubei province to medics, volunteers and workers, as well as families who lost loved ones in the battle against the virus in Wuhan, capital of Hubei.

Another 15,000 sheep were given to medical teams consisting of 42,000 members from 29 municipalities, provinces and regions which were sent to assist Hubei.
