The pilot use of traffic lights embedded at the back of buses in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, recently raised much concern among local residents, according to a news report Dec 15.

Powered by 5G technology, two buses online 705 are able to live display traffic signals at crossroads, indicating the remaining time for waiting in each direction.

The application of the cutting-edge technology was inspired by public concerns as buses used to block the view from smaller cars and drivers could not work out how the traffic would flow.

Traffic signals are also shown live to bus drivers, helping them to judge and offer suggestions on driving speeds and routes.

A bus driver surnamed Bao said the system relieved him of stress as he can drive more safely and receive early warnings of pedestrians running a red light or cars behind him overtaking and changing lanes.

The technology is expected to apply to more bus lines in the future.
