The establishment of the national-level Hangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone was approved by the State Council in 1993. It is the only national development zone housing industrial parks, higher education zones, and export processing zones.

Electronic engineering, biological medicine, textile and chemical fiber, light Industry and food industry, as well as high-tech chemical industry are the five major industries in the development zone.

The development zone has been ranked first among its counterparts in the province following a recent assessment by the Department of Commerce of Zhejiang Province.
