Groups of people with disabilities from Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province recently took on a special task of evaluating accessible facilities at the sporting venues of the upcoming 19th Asian Games.

During this project, disabled individuals assessed the safety call buttons located throughout the venues, the angle and height of mirrors in restrooms, and the braille and barrier-free signs at the viewing areas, barrier-free toilets, shower rooms, and elevators.

"Generally speaking, the barrier-free facilities at the venues are quite good. We hope that through minor adjustments, the barrier-free environment of Hangzhou Asian Games and Asian Para Games can be further improved," said a person involved in the project.

"The blind paths are important. We perceive the world through speech and touch so it is better to have braille map at the entrance of public places and voice reminders of where each accessible facility is," said a blind participant.

Zhang Hua, president of the Hangzhou Barrier-free Environment Promotion Association, said that the roadside kerbs at both ends of the pedestrian road in Hangzhou have basically achieved zero height difference, and the public toilets have reached the barrier-free standard. We disabled people in wheelchairs dare to go out and drink water.
