Hangzhou released a virtual character named "Hang Xiaoyi", which will be a spokesperson for the city, on May 16.

The virtual character was created by the Hangzhou Administration of Culture, Radio and Television, and Tourism and the Hangzhou branch of China Mobile.

The 18-year-old avatar, which wears a green qipao - a traditional Chinese dress - is able to interact with humans and answer questions related to life in Hangzhou.

Officials said that the virtual character will appear in mobile phone apps and recommend Hangzhou's scenic areas and delicious food.

The virtual character can also offer traffic advice and handle hotel reservations.
