Xianghu Laboratory, located in Xiaoshan district, Hangzhou, is dedicated to modern agriculture and biological manufacturing and was established on June 14, local media outlets reported.

The lab was one of 10 provincial-level labs built by East China's Zhejiang province to develop its industrial landscape in internet plus, life sciences, and new materials.

The Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences will take charge of the building of the lab, while research teams and enterprises from both in and outside Zhejiang province will collaborate with the lab in scientific research and the commercialization of research results.

The lab will consist of four research institutes for biotechnology, genetic resources, biological interactions, and biological manufacturing, and five research sharing service platforms for genetic resource evaluation and exploration, molecular design and digital breeding, biological interactions and agricultural ecology, agricultural inputs and product quality and safety control, and technologcial integration and research commercialization.

By 2023, the lab is expected to build the five research sharing service platforms and strive to make breakthroughs in major advanced technologies related to gene editing, synthetic biology, biological interactions, agricultural nutrition, and life sciences. By 2025, the lab strives to achieve breakthroughs in genome-wide selection, gene editing, and biological interactions. By 2030, it aims to become a world-class innovation platform for modern agriculture and bio-manufacturing and an important platform for showcasing agricultural scientific and technological achievements in the new era.
