The Ancient City of Xindeng in Xindeng town, Fuyang district, Hangzhou recently opened to the public in celebrations of the Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, which falls on Jan 22 this year.

According to Li Kun, leader of the Xindeng archaeology project, many dynasties made efforts to build the city of Xindeng throughout history, thus leaving historical remains that trace back to different historical periods.

Xindeng was first set up as a county in 226 during the Wu Dynasty (222-280). Historical records show that the city was renovated and rebuilt many times in subsequent dynasties.

In 2021, the archaeology team discovered remains of the city walls dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907) , roads dating back to Song Dynasty (420-479), and remains of the gate pier dating back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911), Li said.

The city walls of the Ancient City of Xindeng are well preserved, with the remaining city walls that date back to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties extending more than 2,000 meters.

To celebrate the Spring Festival, Fuyang district will distribute coupons worth 15 million yuan ($2.21 million) to locals and offer discounted prices at designated hotels and scenic spots.
