The Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee announced on Feb 12 that 6G technology will be used in the 19th Asian games in Hangzhou, capital of China's eastern province of Zhejiang, aiming to create a high-tech and intelligent sports event.

The technology refers to reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, an AI-empowered artificial material. It is a smart platform enabling various functions such as data mining, communication, energy harvesting, and sensing by directly processing illuminated information-carrying waves at a physical level.

"It was independently developed by China and boasts low energy consumption and high efficiency, which can reduce power consumption while increasing the signal transmission efficiency," said an expert.

"We have done tests in several sporting venues of the Hangzhou Asian Games. After combining the reconfigurable intelligent surface technology with base stations, the signal intensity in areas with previously poor signal was 10 times greater than before, making it easier to communicate," the expert added.

The technology is still undergoing research and development and is expected to be demonstrated to the public during the Hangzhou Asian Games from Sept 23 to Oct 8.
