Faces of the Games| Halfway through Hangzhou Asian Para Games: How did China fare at home?

At the close of competition on day seven of the Hangzhou Asian Para Games, China's success in capturing gold in the mixed 4x50m medley relay brought the evening's events to a fitting conclusion.  

With the multi-sport spectacle now past its halfway point, a total of 269 top honors have been bestowed - approaching half of those available by the competition's end. Of these, hosts China have cemented a dominant position through stellar performances yielding 118 golds alongside 96 silver and 86 bronze accolades.  

Their robust returns across a gamut of disciplines have established a commanding lead at the summit of both the gold and aggregate medal tables. While other regional heavyweights persist in their efforts, China have unambiguously stamped their mark as the paradigm of excellence in Hangzhou to date.

Making its debut at the Asian Para Games, the canoeing event produced its first gold medal at the Fuyang Water Sports Center on Monday. Chinese veteran Xie Maosan claimed the top spot in the women's KL1 final, clinching the only gold in canoeing for China throughout the entire competition. 

Within the athletics program, China have demonstrably excelled. Of the sizable aggregate of 81 gold medals awarded so far, the hosts have claimed 23. As the athletics events kicked off on Monday, a thrilling day unfolded with 8 teams bagging a total of 25 gold medals. Yet, it was the Chinese athletes who emerged as the triumphant frontrunners, seizing 6 gold medals and even smashing two world records along the way. 

The momentum carried on into Tuesday, as China secured a remarkable 9 more gold medals, once again toppling two world records. Continuing their remarkable streak, Wednesday witnessed China adding 7 more gold medals to their tally, solidifying their exceptional performance.

In the swimming pool, China's aquatic forces have caused a splash. On the third day of swimming finals, the hometown heroes unfurled a comprehensive triumph, pocketing the full complement of 16 golds available that night. Across the initial three-day schedule, China had commanded the pool in resounding fashion, collecting a dominant 38 of 59 maxima on offer. 

In the judo tatami, encompassing a diverse array of 16 individual events, Chinese athletes have showcased their prowess by capturing gold medals across five weight categories.  

As for the archery events, where four competitions have reached their climactic finals, Chinese competitors have exhibited uncommon virtuosity, taking three golds.

Furthermore, the competitions in table tennis, archery, and Go that kicked off on Wednesday have emerged as fresh sources of gold medals for China. The inaugural day of table tennis saw the intense finals across 21 different singles categories for both men and women, resulting in a haul of 10 gold medals for the hosts.  

In the realm of archery, where four gold medals were up for grabs, China laid claim to three golds while also taking one silver, rounding off a superb overall performance. 

Meanwhile, in the cerebral contest of Go which yielded a pair of crowns, Chinese competitor Gong Yunyun emerged victorious as women's champion.
