Hangzhou witnessed the first large-scale application of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, a novel mobile communication technology, during the opening and closing ceremonies of the Hangzhou Asian Games and Asian Para Games.

The event saw 70,000 attendees using their smartphones to share a unique blend of sports and culture. From sharing moments on social media platforms and streaming short videos to making calls online, the advanced technology ensured a smooth network experience for every individual present.

RIS, recognized as one of the key technologies in the 5G enhancement and evolution stage (5G-A) and the anticipated 6G phase, offers solutions to issues related to 5G network coverage blind spots within stadiums, indoor coverage enhancement, edge coverage extension, edge rate improvement, and same-frequency interference suppression. It can improve wireless communication signal strength indoors and outdoors, expand communication coverage, and elevate wireless communication quality.

RIS technology is also low cost, energy efficient, and easy to deploy, thereby promoting the construction of an environmentally-friendly, energy-efficient network. Studies indicate that utilizing RIS technology can save up to 20 percent in base station construction costs and reduce operational costs by 30 to 40 percent while achieving the same transmission speeds.

The introduction of RIS technology at the Hangzhou Asian Games marks the first global application at a major event. The experience garnered from the event will provide valuable insights and robust data support for broader future applications.

The upcoming focus for RIS technology is to further its application in enhancing high-speed rail signals and achieving complete frequency band signal coverage and blind spot supplementation in buildings, underground structures, and tunnels. The advancement will pave the way for greener, more intelligent, and stable wireless signal connectivity in cities.
