West Lake, the iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site in Hangzhou, is redefining tourism with digital innovation.
At the 2024 Smart Scenic Area Conference held on Nov 26, officials highlighted how artificial intelligence and advanced technologies are revolutionizing visitor experiences and environmental management.
For instance, AI-powered systems monitor visitor flow at popular spots like Broken Bridge, issuing warnings when thresholds are reached to enable timely crowd control. As China's first free and open 5A-level scenic area, West Lake's unique city and landscape integration poses management challenges that digital solutions are helping to address.
Since 2019, leveraging Hangzhou's status as a digital economy hub, West Lake has developed five key digital centers, including an intelligent computing center and a space-time geographic information center. These centers employ digital technology to ensure safety, increase aesthetic appeal, and preserve culture, among other uses.
Digital tools have also enhanced ecological protection. Through automated monitoring, real-time water quality data from various lake points is displayed on a central dashboard, enabling swift response to any anomalies.
Tourists benefit from these innovations as well. The "Cloud West Lake" mini-program provides access to services such as reservations, real-time crowd information, and parking assistance. Future upgrades will include location-based activity suggestions, offering visitors tailored experiences and hidden gems to explore.
Under a newly launched 2024–26 digitalization plan, West Lake aims to further integrate technology into the preservation of history and culture as well as visitor engagement strategies, reinforcing its reputation as a global tourism and cultural destination.
