The first phase of Hangzhou's Qiantang Third Bridge renovation project began on Nov 29 with the construction of a temporary causeway.
Located approximately 8 meters upstream from the existing bridge, the 836-meter-long, 9-meter-wide structure will facilitate the transport of materials and equipment for the bridge's main upgrade. The causeway is expected to be completed by May 2025. During this phase, normal traffic across the bridge will not be disrupted.
The main renovation work on the bridge is scheduled to start in late 2025, with traffic diversions in place, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
The upgraded bridge will feature a two-level design with 12 lanes. The upper level will serve as an urban expressway with eight lanes and a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour, while the lower level will function as an arterial road with four lanes and a speed limit of 60 km/h.
Incorporating elements of the original bridge's design, the new structure will blend functionality, aesthetics, and cultural significance, transforming it into a modern landmark that enhances both transportation and the overall cityscape.
