The 2024 UN Datathon China Competition, co-hosted by the United Nations Statistics Division, the UN Global Platform for Big Data and Data Science, and Zhejiang Lab, recently concluded in Hangzhou.

With the theme "Satellite Remote Sensing Big Data for Sustainable Development", the event sought innovative solutions to global sustainability challenges.

Lorenzo De Simone, an expert from the UN's Earth Observation Task Team, praised participants for their creativity in applying remote sensing technologies and highlighted the competition's potential to drive progress toward the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

This year's competition attracted over 50 teams from leading institutions like Peking University, Renmin University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Following two rounds of evaluation, 12 teams advanced to the finals, presenting projects addressing food security, disaster prevention, urban management, and environmental monitoring.

The top prize went to the project team that designed an ECR model for agricultural scaling and food production potential. Second prizes were awarded to projects on satellite sea surface temperature enhancement and real-time atmospheric and surface anomaly monitoring. Six other teams received awards for visualization, creativity, and practical usages.
