For 18-year-old Wang Peijia, this Chinese New Year was all about training, the Asian Winter Games – currently being held in Harbin, capital of China's northernmost province of Heilongjiang – and Northeastern cuisine.
To prepare for her college sports admission exam, she and her mother – from Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province – spent three months in Harbin – known as the 'Ice City' – braving -30 C temperatures and a seven-day-a-week training schedule.
Wang, Zhejiang's first national master athlete in figure skating, aims to continue her sport at Harbin Sport University or Capital University of Physical Education and Sports. Despite her intense routine, she found time to explore the Ice and Snow Festival there and enjoy local delicacies.
If successful, Wang will be Hangzhou's first figure skater ever admitted to college through the sports exam. Looking ahead, she hopes to return home and train more "ice princesses" like her.
