In the Luojiazhuang farmers market in Hangzhou – capital of East China's Zhejiang province – after shopping for some produce, moviegoers can enter the theater with a bag of fresh eggs in hand.

This unique experience is now a reality after the market's latest renovation and upgrade – seamlessly integrating a cinema on the third floor with the bustling marketplace below.

The revamped market, the largest in west Hangzhou, now features escalators connecting the shopping area directly to the cinema, alongside new additions like a KFC and a clothing store.

Residents can now shop for groceries, grab a meal, buy clothes and watch a flick.

"I just found out that the market has a cinema," said a woman surnamed Li, who lives nearby. She brought her two kids for a movie before school resumed, calling it a much more convenient option than traveling farther into the city.

Meanwhile, an elderly couple, a Mr Wang and his wife, planned to watch a film before heading downstairs to buy fresh ingredients for dinner.

The cinema itself isn't new – it first opened in 2016 – but it was previously separate from the market. The recent upgrade included renovated interiors, new screens in all six theaters and improved accessibility, making it an integral part of the market experience.

The revamp is part of a broader effort to redefine Luojiazhuang farmers market as more than just a traditional marketplace. The first floor remains dedicated to seafood and fresh produce, while the second floor offers vegetables, meat and even a flower section with a newly built greenhouse.

The market has also introduced a smart digital payments system, allowing customers to scan QR codes for payments, discounts and even parking perks.
