Driven by improved visa policies, streamlined entry procedures and even the global success of Chinese films, inbound tourism to China is really on the rise.

In the first two months of 2024, Hangzhou International Airport recorded 780,900 inbound and outbound passengers, a 14.93 percent year-on-year increase. Even more impressive, inbound travelers hit 380,900 people, representing 15.27 percent growth.

South Korean travelers were reportedly the keenest to visit Hangzhou, after China introduced a trial visa-free policy for South Korean passport holders last November.

More Korean tourists have since been visiting Hangzhou to explore West Lake, stroll along Hefang Street and savor local delicacies like Dongpo pork.

"China has amazing food, beautiful scenery and many films I love. I want to visit the places I've seen in movies," said Lee Jong-sang, a traveler from South Korea.

Apart from South Korea, Japan, Thailand and Malaysia are also key source markets, reflecting a rising trend in short-haul travel across Asia.

To enhance the travel experience, Hangzhou airport customs has introduced smart gates at the arrivals area, which automatically open to guide passengers through the baggage-screening process. Embedded X-ray machines now inspect checked luggage, reducing wait times during peak hours.
