Hangzhou's innovation drive: New breakthroughs on horizon

As China embarks on a new phase of its technological and industrial transformation, the city of Hangzhou – capital of East China's Zhejiang province – is resolutely at the forefront, integrating innovation with industry.

At this year's national two sessions, deputies and members gathered to discuss strategies for propelling Hangzhou's innovation landscape forwards.

Ouyang Hongwei, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and executive deputy director of the Liangzhu Laboratory – one of the first provincial laboratories established in Zhejiang – proposed the establishment of a technology transformation fund, to support those with doctorate degrees keen on innovation but are lacking initial capital.

Tu Hongyan, National People's Congress deputy and chairwoman of silk, textiles and garments manufacturer the Wensli Group, underscored the role of leading enterprises in merging technological and industrial innovation. She called for greater business enterprise involvement in bridging research and market applications – urging companies to share technological advancements across industry supply chains to drive high-quality development.

Yang Huayong, CPPCC member and academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, stressed the importance of universities in fostering top-tier innovation talent.

He advocated interdisciplinary research and closer industry collaborations, citing Zhejiang University's efforts in biomanufacturing and 3D printing as successful examples.

Liang Tingbo, NPC deputy and Party secretary of Zhejiang University's First Affiliated Hospital, discussed the need to cultivate clinical scientists who bridge medical practice and research.

He emphasized creating platforms that attracted top medical talent, encouraged young researchers to take leadership roles and supported pioneering research in artificial intelligence-driven healthcare.

Wang Jie, NPC deputy and deputy general manager of Baima Lake Laboratory, highlighted the role of advanced research platforms in accelerating technology commercialization.

Baima Lake Laboratory recently set a world record for perovskite solar cell efficiency, demonstrating the power of collaboration between academia and industry. The laboratory's structured approach to research validation is said to ensure smoother transitions from prototypes to market-ready solutions.
