The BRICS Deep-Sea Resources International Research Center was launched in Hangzhou on April 24, marking a major step forward in deep-sea scientific cooperation among BRICS nations.

The center aims to address global challenges such as resource scarcity, ecological protection, and equitable development. It aligns with BRICS' broader strategy to advance sustainable development and tackle global inequality through scientific innovation.

Focusing on key areas like deep-sea minerals, oil and gas, cold seeps, environmental governance, energy utilization, and equipment technology, the center will pool leading research strengths from BRICS countries. It will offer strategic advice and solutions for major sustainability issues while promoting joint research, expeditions, platform sharing, technology transfer, and talent development.

Led by the Second Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and guided by national agencies including the Ministry of Science and Technology, the MNR, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the center aims to enhance BRICS' role in global ocean governance.

On the same day, the first BRICS Seminar on Deep-Sea Resources and Environmental Sustainability was also held, during which a broad consensus was reached to strengthen cooperation in deep-sea technology and sustainable development.
