At the Former Residence of Hu Xueyan in Hangzhou on May 13, gold medal English-speaking guide Xu Zhucheng led American tourist Jack through centuries of Chinese history.
As he explained the story behind the Orchid Pavilion Preface, Xu's bilingual narration reflected a growing trend — more foreigners are exploring China thanks to eased visa policies.
During this year's May Day holiday, Hangzhou welcomed 16,500 foreign visitors, up 47 percent year-on-year. Xu now guides over 25 groups of foreign tourists monthly, noting a rise in younger, independent travelers seeking immersive experiences. "Tourists today want more than sightseeing — they want cultural connection," he said.
From introducing American visitors to the China-US Friendship Park to helping Italians print classical Chinese poetry, Xu bridges cultures through storytelling and hands-on activities. "One guest said he'd keep his poem print on his office desk forever," Xu recalled.
Beyond tours, Xu shares Chinese culture on social media and plans to expand to global platforms. "I used to learn English to see the world," he said. "Now I use it to help the world see China."
As Jack's tour ended, Xu gifted him a framed bilingual Orchid Pavilion Preface. Jack replied, "You've taught me so much about Chinese culture."
As the sun set over Hangzhou, their exchange was just one of many stories bringing China and the world closer together.
