Two newly hatched mandarin ducklings were spotted on the morning of July 14 near Yudai Bridge on the Su Causeway in Hangzhou's West Lake.
According to local volunteers, it marked the 26th brood of ducklings born this year at West Lake — and the date of their tardy arrival set a record.
"It's rare to see ducklings hatch in July," said Jing Guang, a volunteer with the West Lake mandarin duck patrol.
The previous latest recorded hatching was on July 5, 2024. This year, however, the 25th brood appeared on July 11 and just three days later, the 26th emerged, estimated to be only four to five days old.
Thanks to the dedicated protection efforts of volunteers and supportive measures undertaken by the scenic area's staff, the survival rates of ducklings have risen significantly.
Since the first brood appeared on April 25, West Lake and surrounding waters have welcomed a record-breaking 32 broods totaling 259 ducklings — surpassing the 2021 record of 28 broods and 233 ducklings.
