In the scenic mountains of Fuyang district, Hangzhou, a once-thriving paper-making hub dating back over 1,000 years is experiencing a cultural and industrial revival.

The region's traditional bamboo paper, once favored by imperial courts in the Song Dynasty (960-1279), is now being preserved and reimagined for modern audiences.

The turning point came in 2008 with the accidental discovery of the Song Dynasty Sizhou paper workshop ruins during roadworks. This led to a big archaeological effort and the protection of the site, which was later designated a national key cultural heritage site.

In recent years, Fuyang has launched a comprehensive conservation project that includes the construction of the Sizhou Paper-Making Museum and an archaeological park — positioning the area as a major center for China's paper culture.

Master papermakers like Zhu Zhonghua, a 13th-generation artisan, have helped restore lost techniques such as the making of ultra-thin Wujin paper, once used in palace decorations. His handmade bamboo paper was even featured in the official souvenirs for the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.

Meanwhile, local innovators like Li Wende are bringing tradition to life through interactive museums, online livestreaming sessions and hands-on workshops.

As a result, Fuyang's handmade paper has become a new driver for rural revitalization and cultural tourism, with visitors — ranging from schoolchildren to foreign tourists — lining up to experience the full journey from bamboo to paper.

As Fuyang blends heritage with innovation, its ancient craft is no longer merely a relic of the past — it's a vibrant symbol of cultural resilience and renewal.
