The Shanshui Action: Shanshui Moving Image Installation Art Exhibition is now on at the China Academy of Art Museum in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, running through to Oct 8.
It's being hosted by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture, Radio, TV and Tourism and organized by the China Academy of Art. The show focuses on shanshui — literally mountains and waters in Chinese — and reinterprets traditional Chinese landscape art through immersive new media installations.
Curated by Gao Shiqiang, Tang Xiaolin and Zhang Ting, the show brings together artists including Gao himself, Chen Xuan and Jiang Ben — whose works blend multi-screen visuals, sound and interactive elements to explore the cultural and philosophical depth of shanshui.
Since debuting the Shanshui Manifesto in Strasbourg city in France in 2017, Gao's team has made the theme central to their practice — paying tribute to Sino-Western artistic exchanges, while at the same time reflecting on humanity's relationship with nature.
Highlights include new works such as Shanshui: Six Movements of Cloud Mountains and Shanshui: Tang Poetry Dictionary — offering viewers a meditative experience that combines tradition with innovation.
