In Hangzhou, a new trend is drawing curious professionals, freelancers and even company bosses: Paying to "pretend to go to work".

For just 30 yuan ($4) a day, visitors can sit in a high-rise office, take part in a mock job interview and experience a 9-am-to-6-pm office routine.

The space, named Pretend Work Unlimited Company, was launched by 30-year-old entrepreneur Chen Yingjian.

Since opening, it has attracted a mix of folks — from remote workers feeling isolated, to young graduates filming short videos, small business owners and those facing career uncertainty.

One jewelry seller has "commuted" there for half a month, while others stay only a day.

The company offers around 40 desks, with daily or monthly rates ranging from 30-600 yuan. Even wealthy entrepreneurs have joined out of curiosity, taking part in "mock interviews" despite earning millions from their real businesses.

Chen says his goal is to turn the project into a "career recharge station" —  offering a space where people can focus, connect and perhaps receive entrepreneurship or job-training support.

The idea has sparked wide debate online. Some see it as a quirky form of shared office space, while experts suggest it could evolve into a flexible employment or freelancer support model.

Lawyers, however, caution about potential risks — from privacy concerns to illegal activities.

For now, many participants say the appeal is simple: Enjoying the atmosphere of "going to work" but without the pressure of a real job.
