To mark the 80th anniversary of victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the World Anti-Fascist War (1939-45), the Xiaoshan Museum — in Xiaoshan district of Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province —  launched the exhibition Flames of War on Aug 2.

Jointly organized by the Xiaoshan cultural relics bureau and the museum, the exhibition features 210 artifacts, photos and documents that highlight Xiaoshan's frontline role in Zhejiang during the conflict.

The exhibition is divided into five sections — frontline defenses, major battles, wartime society, Japanese atrocities and resistance heroes — displaying relics such as military gear and memorial stones from key battles.

Running alongside all this is Pride Abroad: Images of the Chinese Expeditionary Force, a presentation of rare photos of the 400,000-strong force that fought in 1942-45 in Burma, now Myanmar. It suffered nearly 200,000 casualties, troops who were protecting the Yunnan-Burma Road — a vital highway that links Yunnan province in Southwest China to Myanmar.

The twin exhibitions, open free to the public to Oct 8, offer a sweeping view of China's wartime endurance and sacrifice.
