In the post-Asian Games fitness boom, the Olympic sport of climbing is moving from niche to mainstream in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, local media outlets reported.
On Aug 22, six-year-old enthusiast Nini was spotted happily scaling a wall at a climbing gym by West Lake, one of many new venues attracting children and adults alike. Parents say climbing improves coordination and safety awareness; fans praise its mix of strength, problem-solving and social appeal.
Foreign residents, like an American teacher nicknamed "Old Pan", noted the rapid growth, with the sport racing ahead with just a few gyms offering it a few years ago to a dozen nowadays. Adding to all the excitement and momentum was 2024 Paris Olympics and Chinese climber Wu Peng's silver medal.
Industry data showed that China had 811 climbing gyms in early 2025, up 27.5 percent year-on-year, with Hangzhou expanding steadily.
Prices vary: Private lessons can cost 12,000 yuan ($1,677) a year, but casual climbs start at about 80 yuan.
Gym owners call climbing a blue ocean sport, with venues catering to beginners, boulderers and competitors. Coaches stress safety and proper training, but with its mix of challenge and fun, climbing is clearly on the rise.
