Decode China: Guardians of West Lake
In Hangzhou's West Lake, Erik Solheim, former under-secretary-general of the United Nations, met an environmental volunteer named Zhu Shuhong.
Every morning at 4:30 am, no matter rain or shine, Zhu arrives at the West Lake on time—not for exercise or sightseeing, but to clear aquatic weeds. For over 4,000 days, he has kept this quiet vigil.
Zhu does not collect plastic waste. He is removing decaying decaying vegetation to maintain the lake's clarity and health. His dedication has inspired hundreds of volunteers, many of whom join before daytime work, all for the sake of a cleaner West Lake.
They are everyday heroes.
The West Lake bears not only scenic beauty, but also the weight of history and civilization. With every bend of his back, Zhu does more than cleaning the water, but also preserving memories and safeguarding the future.
Decode China 2: Erik Solheim's storytelling presents Episode 3, Guardians of the West Lake, sharing this touching tale of quiet devotion.
