The Italian musical The Divine Comedy — adapted from Italian poetry maestro Dante Alighieri's 14th-century epic of the same name — will be staged from Sept 18 to 21 at the Jinsha Lake Grand Theater in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province.

The Divine Comedy, originally written during Europe's Middle Ages, is one of the most significant literary works in Western literature. This modern version, first staged in 2007, uses a rich repertoire to reimagine Dante's profound reflections on the human soul and fate, taking audiences through hell, purgatory and paradise.

It combines classical music with modern rock elements and integrates cutting-edge 3D technology and dynamic projections for an unprecedented visual and auditory experience.

"The magic of the musical is that it doesn't just tell a story about Dante's journey, it invites the audience on their own journey," said director, Andrea Ortis.

As a highlight of the 55th anniversary of China-Italy diplomatic ties, the show has already toured eight Chinese cities and put on over 40 performances, drawing acclaim for its fusion of tradition and innovation. Hangzhou marks its final stop in China, adding a new chapter to China-Italy cultural exchanges.
