The 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves opened on Sept 22 — in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province — drawing global attention to one of the highest-level events on ecological conservation.

A 3,500-square-meter exhibition at the Hangzhou International Expo Center has been a real highlight, with United Nations, national and Zhejiang pavilions alongside an international zone featuring 63 institutions from 18 countries and regions.

Among the most eye-catching exhibits, Wenzhou's Nanji Islands — one of Zhejiang's two UNESCO biosphere reserves — has recreated an eco-museum featuring seashells, algae specimens, local fish and birds, including the endangered Chinese crested tern.

A hand-drawn picture book telling the tern's survival story has attracted many visitors, including delegate Catarina from Angola, who said the display offered valuable lessons for her country's biosphere planning.

The Oman pavilion has drawn attention with eco-friendly products such as rose water and soaps made from roses grown sustainably on the mountain of Jebel Akhdar, over 3,000 meters above sea level. "Protecting ecology means protecting life," said representative Haitham, highlighting how such initiatives increase local incomes while conserving biodiversity.

Despite diverse approaches, exhibitors shared a common message: Safeguarding each and every ecosystem is key to a shared, sustainable future.
