Hangzhou native tennis player Wu Yibing's run at the 2025 Hangzhou Open ended on Sept 22, when the local favorite fell 0-2 to Kazakhstan No 3 seed Alexander Bublik in the men's singles semifinals.

Bublik's dominant serve proved decisive, firing 19 aces in total and breaking Wu twice in the opening set to win 6-3. Wu, who had staged three comebacks earlier in the tournament after dropping first sets, found little rhythm this time. Bublik again broke early in the second set and sealed another 6-3 victory.

Just a day earlier, Wu had battled Russian Daniil Medvedev for over three hours in the quarterfinals, leaving him physically drained.

Despite the defeat, Wu said he was proud of his performance: "The result may not be what I wanted, but I've already gone beyond my expectations. I'll give myself full marks," he added.

It marked Wu's best finish at his hometown tournament, where past years saw disappointment with injuries and early exits.
