Hangzhou is set to gain a new cultural landmark along the Qiantang River — the Qiantang Bay Art Museum, designed by Norwegian architecture firm Snohetta, whose striking proposal has been selected for construction.
The project, located in the core area of the Qiantang Bay Future Headquarters Base in Qianjiang Century City, covers about 11,000 square meters and will stand as one of the key landmarks supporting Zhejiang province's vision of a world-class bay area.
Snohetta, known for projects such as the Shanghai Grand Opera House, Beijing City Library, and the Oslo Opera House, beat out top contenders including Bjarke Ingels Group and Atelier Deshaus.
Inspired by the theme "Tides of Creation", the design captures the rhythm of the Qiantang River tide, blending architecture, landscape, and art into one flowing form that reflects the city's dynamic spirit and cultural vitality.
The international design competition, launched in April, attracted 118 firms from 15 countries and regions, with 12 shortlisted for the final round. The museum's concept emerged following expert reviews and a public vote initiated by Qianjiang Century City in late August.
With the art museum design now confirmed, proposals for the museum, library, and international youth exchange center — three other cultural landmarks in the same area — are expected to be unveiled soon.
