Strawberries from Jiande, Hangzhou, Zhejiang — known as China's Strawberry Town — have made a breakthrough overseas, with successful cultivation recently achieved in Bangladesh.
In early 2025, veteran Jiande grower Wu Zhonglin traveled to the outskirts of Dhaka to assist in local planting, marking the first time Jiande strawberry technology was introduced to the South Asian country. Despite frequent floods and high farming costs, the first harvest sold out quickly at premium prices, drawing strong local interest.
After more than 40 years of development, Jiande's strawberry industry has grown to encompass a full supply chain worth over 5 billion yuan ($719.8 million), supporting nearly 50,000 farmers nationwide. Today, more than 13,000 Jiande growers cultivate strawberries across 27 Chinese regions and now abroad, exporting not just fruit, but standardized techniques, seedlings, and management models.
Backed by government-led standard greenhouse programs, research institutes, and deep processing industries, Jiande aims to evolve from a production base into a global hub for strawberry breeding, technology output, and brand management — turning a local specialty into a global treat.
