Hangzhou has introduced a new car rental service for inbound tourists starting May 1, enabling foreign visitors to drive in Zhejiang province with greater ease.

Under the program, eligible travelers can pre-apply online via the Trip.com platform, then complete the process upon arrival at Hangzhou International Airport. Temporary Chinese driving permits are issued on-site, allowing visitors to pick up their rental cars shortly after landing.

The initiative streamlines procedures into a "pre-apply online, process on arrival, drive instantly" model. Authorities plan to expand partnerships with automakers such as Geely and Leapmotor to enhance vehicle supply and services.

Rental options range from economy to luxury vehicles, with daily rates between 198 and 677 yuan ($29–99), often without requiring deposits.

Data from Trip.com shows inbound car rental orders in Hangzhou rose 20 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, reflecting growing demand for self-drive and immersive travel experiences.

Officials say the program will further boost inbound tourism by enabling visitors to explore both urban attractions and rural landscapes at their own pace, supporting more personalized and in-depth travel across Zhejiang.
