Global youth voices turn Qiantang into a song for the world

A new city-themed music video title A Letter to the World was released online during this year's Youth Day celebrations on May 4, bringing together young performers from 18 countries to sing about Hangzhou's Qiantang district from an international perspective.
The MV, created for the 2026 Qiantang Cup International Youth Chinese Culture Competition, is believed to be Zhejiang province's first district-level city music video produced by young people from around the world.
Rather than naming Qiantang directly, the song captures the district through vivid imagery — wetlands, riverside scenery, bustling streets, university classrooms and fast-growing innovation hubs — reflecting both its Jiangnan charm and youthful energy.
Performed by international students and young talents from across five continents, the project highlights how Chinese language and culture have connected young people from around the world in Hangzhou.
As Hangzhou's youngest district, Qiantang has become known for its strong youth culture. Home to 14 universities and nearly 250,000 students, the area continues to attract young innovators, entrepreneurs and international talent with its expanding global services and startup-friendly environment.
Director and songwriter Xue Baichuan, who has spent the past five years building his career in Qiantang, said the song was created as both a tribute from global youth to the city and an invitation from Qiantang to the world.
