The Recreating Yuanmingyuan: A Century-long Journey Home for National Treasures exhibition at the Zhejiang Provincial Museum's Zhijiang Branch has become one of Hangzhou's hottest cultural attractions since opening on July 30, with visitors reportedly waiting up to five hours to see four original bronze animal heads from Yuanmingyuan: the tiger, monkey, pig and ox heads.

The four relics are more than masterpieces of craftsmanship. They carry memories of a turbulent history. The 12 animal heads were looted and scattered overseas in 1860. Seven have since returned to China through efforts by both official and private groups.

The exhibition has also resonated strongly with younger generations, who are finding new ways to tell the stories of lost cultural relics and their return. For many, the appeal goes beyond the artifacts themselves to a deeper sense of cultural identity and historical memory.

The exhibition drew more than 57,000 visitors during its first weekend. To improve the visitor experience, the museum now requires separate reservations and limits daily attendance to 10,000.

The return of cultural relics is not simply about bringing treasures home. It is also about reconnecting the present with history and preserving cultural memory for future generations.
