Covering an area of 1,825 square kilometers, Tonglu county administers four sub-districts, six towns and four villages and had a registered household population of 448,800 as of 2019. It is also home to a large She ethnic minority population.

Tonglu had a regional GDP of 38.64 billion yuan ($5.7 billion) in 2019, a year-on-year increase of 6.8 percent. The per capital GDP and disposable income of Tonglu residents were 92,439 yuan and 54,279 yuan, respectively.
