Dubbed the "southern gate" of Hangzhou, Xiaoshan district covers 1,420 square kilometers and has 12 towns and 14 sub-districts under its administration. The household registered population by 2019 was 1.19 million.

Xiaoshan is home to the three main stadiums and sports village of the 19th Asian Games, which is to be hosted by Hangzhou in September 2022.

In 2019, Xiaoshan realized a regional GDP of 184.77 billion yuan ($27.24 billion), up 6.4 percent year-on-year. The per capita disposable income was 157,000 yuan.
