Founded 800 years ago, Xiajiang Village is nestled in a mountainous area of southwest Hangzhou. The village is proud of its 600-year-old Jiang Genealogy, containing 16 family rules, including “honor parents; teach children; maintain harmonious relations with members of the household and neighbors; care for orphaned children, the lonely elderly, and the weak; abstain from gambling; and refrain from extravagance.” House rules such as these have quietly become a part of the fabric of village life in Xiajiang, where the people are recognized for their honesty.
