The ridges surrounding the West Lake are interconnected and the hills are moderate, making them suitable for hiking. Starting from 2008, the Hangzhou city government fully renovated the mountain roads surrounding the lake, drew up maps, and published a guide to encourage residents to hike for fitness.

In 2011, 15,000 people attended the International Hangzhou Trailwalk Conference, becoming an influential public health project in the city.
