World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5th of June every year, and is the United Nation's principal vehicle for promoting environmental protection.

First held in 1972, the day has been an effective tool for raising awareness of emerging environmental issues such as marine pollution, human overpopulation, global warming, sustainable consumption, and wildlife crime.

This year's global World Environment Day celebrations will take place in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, and will focus on air pollution.
