Hangzhou dark rice
It's an age-old tradition to eat dark rice or Wumifan (乌米饭 in Chinese) on the day of the Start of Summer in Hangzhou, which falls on May 5 this year. The dark rice is made from glutinous rice and the juice of sea bilberry leaves, an herb that gives the color and flavor to the rice, functioning as a medicine that spares children from mosquito bites.
