Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, is home to the largest number of senior high school students to be recommended for direct admission to China's top universities of any city in Zhejiang this year, according to an admission list released by the provincial education and examination authority on June 16.

This year, Zhejiang had 138 senior high school students qualify for early admissions to top universities through recommendation, 126 of whom are from Hangzhou, five from Ningbo, three from Wenzhou, three from Shaoxing and one from Jinhua.

Among the Hangzhou students, 102 are from Hangzhou Foreign Languages School (HFLS, or Hangwai), while the remaining are from Hangzhou No 2 High School, Hangzhou Xuejun High School, Xiaoshan High School, and Fuyang High School.

The list shows that all of the top students selected from HFLS have chosen language majors at their respective universities, with other popular majors including computer science, dynamics, physics and other sciences.

According to the regulations laid out by the Ministry of Education, the list of students winning early admission to top universities should be revealed to the public.

During the publicity period, anyone who takes issue with the shortlist can report to the Zhejiang education and examination authority by calling at 0571-88906609. The publicity period will last from June 16 to 28.

With a focus on foreign language teaching and the long-term development of every student, HFLS is one of the most-respected secondary schools in Zhejiang province.

Founded in 1964 under the direct administration of the Zhejiang Education Department, HFLS prides itself on being one of China's earliest foreign language schools, and now enjoys the privilege of recommending 20 percent of its graduates to top universities in China without the need to take entrance exams.

HFLS is located in Xiaoheshan Higher-education Zone in west Hangzhou, one of China's best-known tourist destinations. The city is only a two-hour drive from Shanghai.
