The artistic tea-growing village
To David W. Ferguson, honorary chief English editor at Foreign Languages Press, the visit to Waitongwu was a brand-new experience. This small village of 156 farming households now focuses its activities on cultural development.
In 2007, a teacher from China Academy of Arts established a workshop in Waitongwu, appealed to its overall environment. This was the first of what became a steady flow of artists to Waitongwu, injecting a new vitality into the village. Waitongwu now hosts a population of around 200 artists. The artists' studios attracted a surge of associated activities-galleries, tea rooms, cafes and boutique hotels, making the village a beacon for artists and art enthusiasts.
How do the artists and Waitongwu empower each other? In the last episode of Decode China: David Ferguson's Storytelling, Ferguson shares the story of Waitongwu with you.
